Name: Tatiana Ivanova Basilevskaya
Title: Ambassador from the U.S.S.R.
History:
Tatiana was the only child of two poor Muggle parents, both of whom worked in factories and told her repeatedly how much worse things had been for her grandparents and her great-grandparents. She was an extremely bright student, and before she accidentally sent her classmates' pencils flying around the room she dreamed of being a teacher. Like other magical children born anywhere near Moscow, she was sent to the state's rather hastily erected school for witches and wizards, where she distinguished herself in Languages and Transfiguration and even won the opportunity to study at Durmstrang for a year. By the time she was eighteen, she had no further interest in teaching. Instead she managed to wriggle her way into the ranks of the Communist Party and began to come to people's attention. When she was twenty-eight, she was given when seemed like the chance of a lifetime; the legendary ambassador to the English Ministry of Magic, Ivan Kapralov, chose her as a senior assistant, and she spent the next few years very happily absorbing English like a sponge and learning more than she had ever wanted to know about the foreign Ministry.
Then Ivan did something rather dumb. He got himself killed.
In the ensuing political chaos, Tatiana distinguished herself as a diplomat for the first and probably only time. She successfully prevented Moscow from doing much more than sending very nasty letters to the English Minister of Magic and kept assorted accusations at a minimum, mostly just by shouting about tracking down the dregs of society and bringing Muggle institutions into the situation until everyone else shut up for fear that she would actually carry through with her threat. Unfortunately for Tatiana, her one act of brilliance led to a very unwelcome promotion and she found herself acting as the de facto ambassador to a Ministry. Thirty-two years old, utterly out of her element, too belligerent to make any headway and too bright to be easily duped, she's stuck in London until such time as the Kremlin decides she's outlived her usefulness. She hates London. Someone is going to pay.
Personality:
Tatiana is both unwaveringly loyal to Moscow and extremely intelligent, which means that she has to perform some serious mental juggling whenever the Kremlin does something hair-brained. However, she is too professional to ever let any private doubts show, and will defend Moscow's stance on a particular issue come hell or high water. This tenaciousness, combined with a rare-but-impressive temper, hasn't won her many friends. The best thing that can be said for her is that she has a keen sense of fair play, as she is Muggleborn and considers pureblood privilege to be a remnant of an elitist and manifestly imperialist society. This would be all well and good if she didn't drive the point home with a sledgehammer at every given opportunity. She doesn't approve of force (unless the Kremlin's ordered it) and is convinced the the English Ministry of Magic is its own worst enemy. In short, she would actually be a very good diplomat if she didn't have a blind spot exactly the size of Moscow -- and if she wasn't the most tactless individual in the western hemisphere.
